Our Trustees share the ultimate responsibility for governing our charity, making decisions on how it is run. Meet our trustees below, and read this pack for more information on the role and how to apply.
Chair – Chris Beal
Chris has been a trustee since 2010 and has served as chair of the Executive Committee since 2014. He became involved with MITHN after seeing first-hand the passion and commitment of the team when on a job exchange. Chris works at the Ministry of Justice and lives in Hackney Wick, about 15 minutes’ walk from Open House. In his spare time Chris enjoys cycling, climbing, and playing the piano.
Treasurer – Jonathan Rae
Jonathan is a Chartered Accountant and is currently Finance Director of PLATFORM_, a developer and operator of residential accommodation for rent across the UK. As well as finance leadership positions, his professional experience includes corporate finance, risk management, financial reporting, finance operations and systems implementation. He holds a Masters degree in Manufacturing Engineering from the University of Cambridge. Jonathan became a Trustee of MITHN in 2016 and became Treasurer in 2017.
Trustee – James Beckles
James joined the executive committee in 2011. Having spent most of his career in the public sector , he understands the importance of designing and delivering services that meet the needs of diverse communities.
Mind in Tower Hamlets and Newham (MiTHN) is a local charity that delivers tailored mental health services. This commitment to improving the mental health of local people is what inspired James to volunteer as a trustee. He believes the work MiTHN do helps people overcome the everyday stigma they face so that they can lead normal lives.
Trustee – Leonie Thornton HR and Administration Sub Committee Chair
Leonie joined the Executive Committee in May 2014.
Leonie is a senior HR professional with a background in Banking and Finance and has lived and worked in London, Switzerland and Australia. Over the past several years she has had senior regional and international HR leadership roles with Citigroup and State Street Bank, and has past experience as a Corporate Relationship Manager & Commercial Lending Officer. Having decided to change industries, she is currently a Senior HR Business Partner in the RELX group, responsible for HR for their global agricultural business, Proagrica.
Leonie’s keen interest to volunteer within her local community, combined with a passion for supporting the mental health industry lead her to Mind in Tower Hamlets and Newham. Personal family experiences with mental health issues and the wish to make a difference are key drivers to her interest in giving back to and supporting mental health.
Trustee - Gary Jones
Gary has lived in East London for 35 years, and is currently the CEO of Age UK Camden, which also has subsidiary charities working with LGBT older people across London and disabled people in Camden. Gary also previously worked with older people in Newham, Tower Hamlets and Brent. Gary was previously a trustee of the then Mind in Tower Hamlets, and has trustee experience from other charities. Gary has a family member who identifies as a mental health service user. Gary has joined the Finance Sub-Committee as well as the Executive Committee (Board of Trustees).
Trustee - Angie Shannon
Angie Shannon joined the Executive Committee in December 2018.
Angie is a psychodynamic psychotherapist and corporate communications leader with a passion for the talking cure, mental health and inclusion. She has more than 18 years of experience providing therapy to individuals and working with boards to create, communicate and safeguard their purpose, vision, values and strategic aims.
Having held senior leadership roles in telecommunications, travel and finance she brings to Mind in Tower Hamlets & Newham a deep understanding of organisational dynamics, along with skills in change management, digital transformation, stakeholder engagement, performance management, learning and development, brand management and strategic planning.
