Our Trustees share the ultimate responsibility for governing our charity, making decisions on how it is run.
Chair – Chris Beal
Chris has been a trustee since 2010 and has served as chair of the Executive Committee since 2014. He became involved with MITHN after seeing first-hand the passion and commitment of the team when on a job exchange. Chris works at the Ministry of Justice and lives in Hackney Wick, about 15 minutes’ walk from Open House. In his spare time Chris enjoys cycling, climbing, and playing the piano.
Treasurer – Charlie Markham
Charlie’s professional background is in technology and operations, working in industries including software, consulting and financial services. His particular strength is in acting as a catalyst for change and improvement. He is a member of the board of trustees and treasurer.
Four years ago, Charlie’s family friend introduced him to Mind in Tower Hamlets and Newham, where he learned about the work we do and got to know a few of the staff and trustees. He says, “The staff and trustees are an exceptionally kind and hard-working team who substantially improve the lives of people living with mental illness in an underprivileged part of London.”
Trustee – James Beckles
James joined the executive committee in 2011. Having spent most of his career in the public sector , he understands the importance of designing and delivering services that meet the needs of diverse communities.
Mind in Tower Hamlets and Newham (MiTHN) is a local charity that delivers tailored mental health services. This commitment to improving the mental health of local people is what inspired James to volunteer as a trustee. He believes the work MiTHN do helps people overcome the everyday stigma they face so that they can lead normal lives.
Trustee – Leonie Thornton
Leonie joined the Executive Committee in May 2014.
Leonie is a senior HR professional with a background in Banking and Finance and has lived and worked in London, Switzerland and Australia. Over the past several years she has had senior regional and international HR leadership roles with Citigroup and State Street Bank, and has past experience as a Corporate Relationship Manager & Commercial Lending Officer. She recently moved to the media industry and is currently the International HR Director for Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.
Leonie’s keen interest to volunteer within her local community, combined with a passion for supporting the mental health industry lead her to MIND in Tower Hamlets and Newham. Personal family experiences with mental health issues and the wish to make a difference are key drivers to her interest in giving back to and supporting mental health.
